Visually stunning and well acted but not totally gripping. Too many loose scenes that go nowhere. I was mising a flow in the story and therefore becomes a bit boring and certainly overlong
"Visually sublime" where the first words that popped into my head as I was pondering what to describe this film in short, as I was leaving the theater.
Mr Turner is a rather unconventional biopic that focuses on episodes of the main characters life as a means to examine him as a person instead of constructing a narrative centered around him proving a point.
Something I really enjoyed is how the plot seems to work in a more poetic manner rather than following the usual three act structure.
I just can't get over the visual mastery that was being displayed both during interior and exterior scene's. Although the shooting of interior scene's could get rather dull on occasion. Pretty much the whole film is shot to evoke interior and exterior portraiture which worked to incredible effect!
It took me a little while to get adjusted to the slower paste than I am used to, but after that I was completely taken away.
One thing that really annoyed me was the uncomfortably loud and high pitched violin especially during the beginning.
The entire cast is great with a special mention of course for Timothy Spall, him and the rest of the cast delivered very nuanced performances.
Overall this is another one that goes up there among one of my favorite movies of 2014, even though I saw it in 2015.
The least Mike Leigh 'Mike Leigh film' I have seen, this one left me very disappointed. The first half an hour could've benefited from subtitles, as well, so extreme was the mumbling and grunting of Timothy Spall. For me, the cinematography was the star of the show, along with Marion Bailey (Mrs Booth).
A rare misfire from Mike Leigh, though there's still a lot of things to like about it. The cinematography achieves some beautiful recreations of Turner's paintings, and there are some excellent performances, but a lot of the characters are caricatures and most importantly the film lacks a sense of connectivity and progression, so plays as a series of episodes from Turners life, and unfortunately becomes tedious in places.
