Part making of documentary, part remake, part restoration. The layers to this movie all support the understanding of everyone involved; especially how the people and their environment, Slavs under Nazi occupation in 1943 and Serbian filmmakers in 1968, work back and forth to give context for their actions as well as better define these people through their actions.
Expertly included are subtle hints to the brutality they faced under occupation and how that brutality has almost become ingrained in life. Examples include hints of one of crew's time in a concentration camp, brief images of starving children, and the violent climax of the original Innocence Unprotected. The most striking example though is Aleksic demonstrating his cranial constitution by breaking a wood plank against a real human skull. Top notch. 1 year 7 months ago -
