I thought it might be worth commenting here, putting my own thoughts up onto the internet, given pretty much every (unhelpful) comment on this page goes something like "Okay movie, bad ending, didn't enjoy" - for those who intend to watch the movie, you must of course be made aware that the ending is unconventional - surprising for some, who are less used to Coen brothers shenanigans and who prefer a more conventional story telling device - let's see what happens

Story: A guy comes across some money, someone is hunting him for that money, the sheriff finds out and works to protect the guy. spoiler

Themes : In my view, aside from the movie actually being enjoyable, it is also full of depth - about the meaning of life, about unstoppable fate and about knowing your place and weakness in the world and maybe even a bit about moral relativism.

As StefanoEarnest and others have said - you need to understand Coen brother's movies in that light - although even without conscious recognition of these themes, the movie is gripping and intense. I'd highly recommend it.

An ingenious thriller in the offbeat, Coen style that's really about inevitable change. Javier Bardem's cold-blooded killer is a force of nature, fate itself and the unexplainable violence of the modern era Tommy Lee Jones' tired sheriff struggles with. It's also to be commended for its minimalist (well, damn near absent) score. A movie without music that still resonates emotionally? How often have we seen that?

I watched this movie because of Javier Bardem and he was indeed great - but Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones were amazing, too. A very dark movie about how the world has changed and how violence increases or at least changes as well - and the difficulty people have dealing with this. To quote the film: "You can't stop what's coming."

At first the ending bothered me, too. But I agree with Stefano's comment - it does contribute to the atmosphere of this movie.

This comment is directed towards people who didn’t care for the ending. Listen. I didn’t care for the ending either when I first saw it, which was when it was released into theaters in ‘07. I was in eighth grade at the time, so I hadn’t been quite exposed to the world yet. I don’t think I even understood what the film was really even about. Just a few days ago, I decided to watch it again and sweet Jesus, what a movie it is. Yes, it has all the elements of a great crime thriller. Yes, if you look at it solely as a source of entertainment, the ending does fall flat in that respect. But if you watch it for its themes, which deal with the nature of violence, the lack of morality in today’s people and the overall degenerative state of the world, then it is a masterpiece. Plain and simple. It is so world weary and cynical that it almost has a nihilistic message, which seems to be present in a lot of the Coen brothers' films, and the ending only adds to what it’s all about. Watch it again from that standpoint. It is a pure masterpiece of filmmaking.

The last 20 minutes kind of ruin the otherwise good movie!
