it's hard to read this as a comedy-- that feels more like a marketing ploy at the time to get people into the theatre (or maybe i'm too young to remember when humor was so stiff). any humor that does come from this is a grim and rasping sort, cynical and irreverent at once. the cast carries the story, particularly nolte as he commits to his old dog football hero and drags his walking corpse through the runtime. mac davis, bo svenson and charles durning command their time on the screen and john matuszak (gone to soon) provides a heartfelt dramatic break in the last act. a good cast and a slow burning, if glib, outlook on professional football make this a worthwhile entry into sports movie lists.
