A classic of great dimensions that were difficult to distribute to cinemas due to its length - over 5 hours. Apparently everyone was dubbed who did not pass Italian himself, which you may notice when you see it, maybe not - I was not disturbed by it.
I Saw with Lidingö FilmStudio in the spring of 2019 at the FilmHuset in Stockholm, which required some caffeine. ;)
A very good movie when you reflect of it a few days. Fun with very young De Niro, Depardieu and Sutherland. Sometimes a very cruel story - warning.
Best taken in chunks...movie starts losing something after DeNiro and Sutherland show up. Lots of fantastic cinematography and camera movement throughout. But yet. It gets more bizarre after part 1. DeNiro kind of sleepwalks his way through this. DePardiue is well, Depardieu. While Sutherland is excellently Evil, he is still woefully miscast as an Italian, which makes everything involving him very stranger than it should be. (and boy howdy, what he does throughout the movie is VERY cringe-worthy). The ending is a legendary joke. Film lovers should see this just once, but I bet you won't want to watch it a second time.
This isn't for everyone :
this film contains dude and preteen boy dicks, mangled ducks, live pig evisceration, kittycat and child murder, and horse shit stepped on, collected, thrown and smashed in someone's face.
Saw the 5hour cut.....pfffff sorry, but i found it dull and when it was over felt unmoved. Sutherland was really great as a repulsive fascist. Burt Lancaster and Sterling Hayden also brought some spark but the lead charracter felt cold.
I think it is axiomatic that a film with a duration of five hours is too long, but this came by its length honestly. Not only was the film as a whole too long, many of its scenes just dragged on and on. It also had a very cheap feel: no more than a few dozen extras populated the "crowd" scenes. Even the acting was poor: I've never seen DeNiro being any less believable. In case you can't tell, I hated this a lot.
Oh, God, make it stop! I've been sitting here for what seems like days and this movie just drags on and on, with occasional bright moments. I have done long e-mails, skyped my sister and son, played pc games, and still it's going onnnnn. sigh The scenes with the golden light at harvest are really beautiful, though. However, several animals are harmed, even killed.
