This movie appears to be stuck in some sort of weird limbo, it wasn't supposed to get a release at all at first, and then it was said - if I'm not mistaken - that it would come out in the fall. Even no official poster exists of the film, yet it has been available online for about a week now. Subpar special effects aside, it's actually a pretty good (or at least fun) movie, sorta reminiscent of Dylan Dog and the like.
I came across this movie in our local channel. It was dubbed into our language. At first, I wanted to change the channel because it was awkward for me to watch American films that are dubbed. But the story got me watching. Surprisingly, I liked it.
True to its name, Odd Thomas is, well, odd. Part mystery, part thriller, part comedy, part horror, it is a strange creature that never settles into a comfortable cruising atmosphere or speed. Its edits are lumpy with unnecessary and inconsistent voice-over where we're not sure if the titular character is breaking the fourth wall, or simply narrating. While the lead actor does about as much as anyone can with the script, his girlfriend's acting is somewhat clumsy and in need of improvement. That said, her role seemed somewhat of an afterthought.
Willem Dafoe does well in his role as police chief, and the special effects provide a decent backdrop, but the characters and overall movie are hollow with nice window dressings. It is never creepy when it is meant to be, and flips between humour and horror so quickly that the viewer is never really actively involved with the story.
A truly awful script mixed with mediocre acting and inconsistent editing, Odd Thomas is momentarily intriguing, but not invigorating.
Having read the book I was eager indeed to watch the film as I love to see characters brought to life.
I enjoyed the film, the story stayed as true as it could to the book which I like but what I hate is when the script is literally taken out of the book. Make the script more of a nod to the book or it sounds stilted and rehearsed.
Loved the casting choice of Anton Yelsin as I do find him odd, although I've seen him act much better... I blame the direction of this movie not quite settling on a specific genre...
All other casting beyond my fathoming, especially Addison Timlin as Stormy!! Sorry but the girl is as wooden as my decking and ruins it for me.
SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!
That said I cried like a baby at the end, even more so than when I read the book.

6/10Good and interesting story, but you only see this once. Passes the Bechdel test.

This could have been a moderately high grossing box office film. Someone didn't do their job.missdaisy14
