I've little interest in a Braveheart sequel, but with Florence Pugh in the mix, I still watched Outlaw King. The story of Scotland's Medieval hero-king is a rousing enough underdog story, and the English kings of the dead (Edwards I and II) are properly dishonorable tyrants, but the movie is just... fine. One might ask (and I do) why a Scottish actor isn't playing the Bruce, especially considering Chris Pine's performance is earnest but only okay. The battle scenes are of interest and make good use of the period's catalog of tactics, but there's just not anything special or truly memorable about the film. Things happen as per history, an unlikely "equal" relationship develops between king and queen, and history is compressed, Hollywood-style until we get to the inevitable exposition cards. The biggest surprise for me is that the director of Hell or High Water would pick this as a project (and drag Pine along), then not really do anything interesting with it.

Ok biopic and continuation from the Braveheart story. Fine cast and some epic battle scenes

Will never understand why these types of movie choose a significant piece of history only to butcher the real story at every turn. Braveheart got away with it because it got viewers emotionally invested and had impressive battle sequences.

Outlaw King isn't terrible but it's not much good either. Wouldn't recommend.

This film perfectly captures the rituals and customs that feed the practices and choices that are often made in such settings. If you are expecting over-the-top battles, this is not for you. If you are more interested in understanding the relationship of power and duty with ego and identity, this is a recommended watch.

As my profile photo indicates, I am a big fan of Braveheart, so naturally I was very excited for this film. Is it a perfect movie? No, but it was very enjoyable. Quality performances across the board, the villain in this movie is INSANE, some may say its over the top, but I enjoyed the character. Not as good as Pine and Mackenzie's previous collaboration, Hell or High Water, but still worth a watch.
