Surely one of the inspirations for Inception, Paprika is about the clash of reality and dreams and the ability to navigate the latter, with the title heroine a dreamscape therapist trying to find just who is using dream technology to implant the dreams of the insane in normal people and spreading chaos. Visually, it's an amazing piece of animation, surreal but meaningful, and the title sequence could stand alone as a music video and I'd watch it all the time. The story can get a little monotone when the characters deliver technical exposition, but these scenes are few and we're soon in another maverick sequence. Even the most mundane of scenes have some spectacular animated acting, mind you. Most interesting to me was that in addition to the epic terror plot, several characters undergo dream therapy almost incidentally and come out of these events having resolved a personal problem, lending additional richness to the film.

This is really a wonderful movie! It's a crazy ride through wonderful drawings and bizar edits. The movie feels really dreamlike with the cuts, the lack of logic (which is somehow not so disturbing), and the general flow of things.
I think the story lacks some strength and depth compared Perfect Blue and Millenium Actress where I really got a strong connection with the characters and understood their motivations and struggles. Here I just shared their confusion.
I think the morality issue was poorly executed (the mixing of science with technology, and using it as the same thing was a bit irritating). I think that it could have been done better with as much dialogue.
The music by Susumu Hirasawa was fascinating!

Very clever although it takes a while to hit its stride and start to make any sense - the levels of invention and the quality of the animation are both first rate. Funnily enough it would be a great live action remake - animation allows the screenwriter and director to create whatever they can imagine with no limitations - to see that created "live" would be excellent.
