The first movie was great because not only did it pull you into a fun world of pirates, but the characters took time to be developed and interesting...and the plot made a little bit of sense. Except for Javier Bardem's awesomely creepy Captain Salazar, you won't find any of that smartness or care here. A whole lot of wacky, quickly explained situations and set designs set on top of a half-developed plot. At least Johnny Depp doesn't seem as half-assed walking through it this time as in previous adventures (Geoffrey Rush is cashing in the paycheck). Yes, you will have fun (don't miss Sir Paul McArtney in a quick cameo!), but check your brain at the door.

Dont really get why the movie is getting all this hate. Decent film. Paid homage to previous ones & wrapped things nicely. Big fan of the franchise but I just hope its the last one

Anyone claiming this to be on par with the original clearly hasn't seen the original in a loooooooonng, long time. This felt like old hat all over. Nothing was original at all.

Only for dyed-in-the-wool fans of the franchise, I'm afraid.

Johnny Depp's years of method acting as a weird drunken loser really pay off here.

Much better than 2 and 3 but nowhere near as good as the original.

The first movie came out 14 years ago... how is that possible? Somehow it works its way into the film because at this point the whole mythos feels old and worn out. I recall a line of dialogue from one of the other movies (can't remember which) along the lines of "the age of pirates is over, and the world has gotten smaller." It certainly feels like it here.

Johnny Depp is ok, Javier Bardem is acceptable but the plot weighs down the film and feels like the writers dug around in their magic box of sea mythology, dragged something out, and slapped it on a screen. Now we have a sixth film to look forward to.

yippee...

Dead Men Rehash Old Tales. We've seen it all before - dead villains and underwater ships are hardly new ideas in this franchise. Just skip to the second to last scene, where Will and Elizabeth are finally reunited (though poor Keira Knightley doesn't even get a line!).

Had the potential to be the best since the first.

If the filmmakers had dared / had permission to make it more '' adult '' and '' dark ''

If Johnny Depp gave (having permission from Disney) his legendary character a bit more depth and seriousness. In fact, the small moments where he is allowed to use all his talent and not just the comic that he and the series work best.

Several scenes seem unfocused. The one where Salazar and his crew run on the water could have had a strong ''horror'' effect, if for example, it was bad weather and you could see them all the time in the background.

Out with Orlando Bloom, forever.

It's funny, action packed and gorgeously filmed. A lot better than previous films (but nowwhere near the 1st). A nice effort and perhaps, a perfect way to end this series of films (before it gets completely milked)

Simple plot with hilarious action. I personally loved it. It reminds me of the first film. The way it's written makes you forget that there was a 4th movie. There's an after credits scene that'll excite you (well it got me excited lol)

Was this a re-boot? It felt like it was. Take out Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley and bring in who? and who? (where they cast to try to bring in the idiot generation to see this tvrd? Probably). Try to mimic the first one has much as you can (in desperation bring back Bloom and Knightley for some bit parts) and and nothing but failing at every point. For me the only thing keeping me watching this thing was I asking myself (every 5 minutes or so) how big was Javier Bardem paycheck?

Very pleasantly surprised. On par with the original, the writers went back to the humor that made the first one so much fun and it pays off.
