This is a movie I like, although I never expected to. The story is not very realistic, the ending is probably a bit corny, but somehow there's some charme to the story - I'm suspecting most of it is achieved by Julia Roberts with her charisma and her radiant smile. Cute!
Pick up a street whore and meet the love of a lifetime: what a grand premise for a movie! Far easier to envision Gere's character ending with a knife in his ribs, murdered for his cash and credit cards. The financial success of this Cinderella-the-slut story is a sad reflection of the viewing public's gullibility.
