This world of palaces, of thrones,
of crowns
This world of division,
enemy of man
This world of blind custom
hungry for wealth
Would I care if such a world
were mine?
Bodies wounded,
souls thirsty
Confusion in eyes,
despondency in hearts
Is this a world or
a place of bewilderment?
Would I care if such a world
were mine?
Here a man's life is a plaything
Here live worshippers of the dead
Here life has no value,
death comes cheaper
Would I care if such a world
were mine?
Youth strays into crime
Young bodies are adorned
for the marketplace
Here love is another name for trade
Would I care if such a world
were mine?
This world where man
counts for nothing
Loyality and friendship
count for nothing
Where love has no importance
Would I care if such a world
were mine?
Burn it, blow this world away
Take this world away from my sight
Take charge of this world,
you can keep it
Some of the strange contrivances toward the end seemed unnecessary - the plot was already dramatic and compelling enough without them - but still a really lovely film. And, in an unexpected turn of events, I really liked the songs in a Bollywood musical.
Just to get this out of the way...1) Didn't the whistling in the first musical number sound an awful lot like 'Jingle Bells'? and 2) Isn't Mr. Ghosh (Rehman) the spitting image of Montgomery Clift?...ok, enough of the inane and mundane-what a FANTASTIC movie!!!! What didn't it have? More plot twists than the best film noir, enough laughs for any comedy (thank you Johnny Walker), musical numbers that could translate right into any Hollywood musical...sure some of it was corny and uncanny as if it were crafted into a can of corn but who cares? I'll tell you what this movie does have...a nice new comfy little spot right there in my all time top 10 favorite movies! ......don't worry 'To Kill A Mockingbird' I still love you best.....

Possibly the best Hindi film ever made.Shingwauk
Hard time trying to find this movie and even a harder time watching it. Just not for me.Limbesdautomne
The socio-tragic dimension of Chaplin where the comedy is replaced by the poetry. The design of a noir baroque. Masterpiece.Read more in French on La Saveur des goƻts amers.
