Probably a touch over-hyped, but also better than the usual Bollywood serving. While music still plays a role, there are no dance/production numbers and the songs function in much the same way Western audiences expect.
To a complete outsider, the acting seems fine though the real concerns come with the storyline. At times the patriotism can be a bit overwhelming, but it's an important setup for the film's conclusion. While this isn't a beat-you-with-its-message kind of film, it can feel a bit overwrought, but the goal seems to get people to think, not about the events from 1971, but what this all means in the current context of Indian nationalist politics.
At times I found the actions of the characters pretty hard to accept: it felt more like move-the story choices as opposed to recounting with historical accuracy. Can't say I loved or hated it, but at least the offer of a chance to think was appreciated.
Someone else has mentioned that this movie has replaced explosions with emotions in the spy thriller. That it did rather well, but this isn't your usual spy flick by any stretch. 3 years 7 months ago
