Purposely light on the Sci-Fi, Rememory seeks to be a rumination on loss, guilt, repression and the way that memories both good and bad are inextricably connected. It dives into this well, with the help of great performances (notably Peter Dinklage and Julia Ormond), strong cinematography, production design, a solid emotional through line and an evocative synth score.
I also appreciated the visual contrast between the melancholy aesthetic of the real world and the vivid portrayal of the memories (some of which were actually solicited via a social media request to the public at large). And the location work in British Columbia also added much to the proceedings.
All that said, I still have to doc a few points for the movies main weakness. Specifically, a mystery that's more or less inert. Despite trying to create some measure of suspense, most of the answers are readily available to the discerning viewer within the first half hour. There are red herrings that seem utterly pointless once you've unraveled the truth. In fact, the film may have been better served by abandoning the mystery element all together and going for straight psychological drama (though I'll admit that it made me want to see Dinklage play a detective in some future role). There are also darker elements to the technology which get mentioned or briefly shown yet never truly explored. Both the Sci-Fi and mystery elements seemed to have been intentionally shied away from. Enough to make one wonder why a different approach wasn't considered.
Rememory is generally executed with skill and style though. And it's a movie I would recommend to anyone who likes their Science Fiction on the cerebral side. 4 years 11 months ago -
