The steadycam shots are spectacular, reminiscent of "Aguirre" but the ending is quite the opposite. Bale is pretty good. It's kind of an average movie overall because the second half isn't good (I was reminded in numerous times about how Terrence Malick would have made the second half beautifull) and you are just waiting for the predictable ending to come.
No need to watch this, the documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly is a far better film by Herzog, telling the story in a shorter and more enjoyable manner.

Interesting and exciting, but slow in the middle. Bale makes a lot of the film, but it's not his life achievement (as a critic say). I do not notice much of Herzog's direction. You see this once.
