Eh, the modernization was a bit too much for me. If you want Shakespeare, watch the 1968 version. This one was a bit too zany. I thought it was creative that they modernized it but still kept the language, but it didn't quite work for this movie. Leonardo DiCaprio did a very good job, though. But then again, the 1968 version had great actors as well, and they were better looking.
The modern take on Shakespeare's play works, but the two main characters' casting doesn't. Or perhaps their motivations cannot be sold in a modern context. That is the fatal flaw that sinks this otherwise interesting and appealing experiment.
By far my favourite adaptation of the great Shakespeare play.
I remember borrowing this over and over again on VHS from my library when I was very young, I was so in-love with the direction and story (this was before I knew who Shakespeare was) and it has forever remained one of my favourite text to screen love story/tragedy adaptations that I have had the privilege to witness in my life.
I wonder how I would feel about this adaptation if I had seen it for the first time at my age now?
It took a long time for DiCaprio to prove he was a good actor after this mess... Shakespeare for the masses, impossible to expect a good thing from it..
I fell in love with Leonardo DiCaprio because of this film. The introduction to Romeo scene thanks to the Radiohead soundtrack gives me shivers every time.
Also I don't recommend watching this while stoned. I was confused throughout the film on why I couldn't understand them even though they were speaking English. Pretty surreal experience.
a punk version of the play ; it was if they tried to turn a tragedy into a comedy ; for some reason, most of Shakespeare's dialogue is shouted, but I like the nurse's performance

Baz's best I think. But that's damning with faint praise. 7/10Siskoid

I loved that the script is just like the book, very cool movie. And i must say that Dicaprio is the most perfect Romeo ever. ♥sammysin
Super soundtrack on this one. Loved the scene where R & J first meet. Lovely.myfajahas400children
This movie is crazy, just non stop, but in a weird way it's pretty good.Alias
I can dig this. As an adaptation it's lacking, true, but as an experience it's pretty much unique and a lot of fun.daisyaday
