This is another obscure old film that's better than many of the major classics. Highly recommended.

Oh man, it is such a shame this is only available on DVD through the Universal Vault series. Nobody from the classical Hollywood period understood and felt humanity for people quite like Leo McCarey. This is an absolutely charming gem that will put a big, ridiculous smile on your face without even trying.

Laughton was one of the few actors who could get away with giving over the top performances (Mutiny on the Bounty, Hobson's Choice). To see him play sweet, gentle Ruggles is pure joy. A truly brilliant actor.
