It's... ok I guess. Huge fan of Star Wars but a lot of the parody and satire feels amateurish throughout most of the film. Feels like it had a ton of potential that was ultimately let down by the writing. There must be a bazillion ways to make fun of Star Wars and yet the film struggles to take full advantage.
Still funny to this very day, Spaceballs spoofs and scores. It did it in a way that audiences nowadays find to soft in the light of these new wave of raunchier comedies. Moranis, Brooks, Pullman, and the late Candy outdo themselves.
I'm a big Star Wars fan, but I missed this one when it came out in 1987 (I was 14, so I don't know why I missed it). Just watched it the other day and... ugh. I love dumb and funny, but this is just dumb. Doesn't hold up for new viewers, like me (and my friend - same boat: same age as me, loves Star Wars). Some jokes are still decent, but mostly it's not funny, although Rick Moranis is always fun to watch.
I'm sure that for an entire generation, Spaceballs is beloved. Seeing it at my age, at a time when Star Wars jokes are already overdone, I find it kind of a drag. As a teenager, I was a steady ready of Mad Magazine, and no matter how much it helped me craft my sense of humor, I think I'd be a little bored by the same material today. And this is a movie that feels like one of those Mad Magazine movie parodies, with its silly pun names and even the way the sight gags are established. The "Mel Brooksian" bits, where the characters know they're in a movie, are the best parts, but I don't think you need a lot of sci-fi cred to see where a lot of jokes are going. And as much as I liked the John Hurt cameo, it's part of an extended epilogue that's just there to fit in a couple of other genre jokes; I was kind of done with the story at the one-hour mark. And it might all have worked with a more charming lead, but Bill Pullman making "comedy faces" is no Cary Elwes, if you know what I mean. There are some good gags here and there, but all the anachronisms end up making the film look tatty and cheap. An over-obvious parody that's rarely better than okay.
A bit uneven and far from Mel brooks' best film, but the jokes are funny enough to work not just as a good spoof on Star Wars, but also on the Sci-fi genre as a hole.
Alright, some of the jokes are just too stupid to be funny... but in general it's a nice comedy, especially if you like Star Wars, which I do. Some of those lines have become quite famous between me and my friends, so all in all it's quite funny.

Brilliant gem if you are fond of Star Wars and Mel Brooks, otherwise it's just weird and funny anyway :)One of life's great lessons lies within this movie:
Sometimes, light speed is too slow.
