Generic action & effects, weak plot and the jokes fell flat. This movie has practically nothing to distinguish it from the crowd and I doubt i'll even remember much about it a few weeks from now.

I was thoroughly bored.

I agree with those who say this is a great entry in the new franchise. What it lacks in plot and depth it makes up for it in lighthearted adventure. Kind of reminds me of adventure flicks from the 50s and 60s. I did like a lot the previous movies, but reflecting now, with this one as comparison, I can see they took themselves too seriously (which I'm not saying it's a bad thing). As I said, this one just let's that aside and offers you an uncomplicated couple of hours of sheer enjoyment.

The plot is really shallow compared to the other two. The recurring cast has pretty solid acting throughout. Idris is a good actor as well, but the character has nowhere near the proper buildup compared to Nero or Khan. He's just there. All character development is stagnant in this one compared to the other two. There's somehow both more action scenes and more boring scenes at the same time. The movie is just not made as well overall in the slightest. Nothing very deep or interesting like the other two. Even when the plot allows for a perfect chance to be deep, it is glanced over. Just basic action here. Not like a real Star Trek at all.

It's not a bad film, but it's not a good one either; it's just another mediocre Hollywood action movie. Abrams knew how to build tension towards action sequences so that audiences were emotionally invested in it. On the other hand, Justin Lin sort of just throws action set piece after set piece at us until no one remembers what actually happens in this movie. Think of it as Fast and Furious on an alien planet. There's a moment in Furious 7 where Paul Walker runs up a bus that's falling off a cliff... This movie has a similar moment as well that was added in there for no particular reason.

Fun, but forgettable (or really disappointing if you loved the first movie). 3/5

Although I've seen a considerable number of episodes of the television series Star Trek at a young age, I've never felt like a real Trekkie. It fascinated me, but not to such an extent that I'd greet everyone in my daily life using a Vulcan salute. When the next generation Star Trek episodes started (with the charismatic Captain Picard), I was even less interested and existence of this series faded for me completely. Three years ago I saw "Star Trek Into Darkness". And to my surprise this was already the 12th motion picture with the Enterprise still boldly going where no man has gone before. It really didn't blow me away. It wasn't so adventurous as in the television version where they repeatedly discovered new civilizations. Probably it has something to do with nostalgia.

But to be honest, "Star Trek Beyond" made a huge impression on me with his breathtaking images and great action scenes. I was even a little bit moved by the scene with the Flagship Enterprise gradually being reduced to a pile of scrap metal. Seeing this legendary spacecraft lying completely destroyed on the planet Altamid, really hurts. But it's common for every Star Trek episode that they find a solution to resolve the impossible situation. The same applies to this film. Although there were a few moments when it felt a bit exaggerated. But I have to say that the images from the Space Station Yorktown, the attack by Krahl's swarm and the crash of the Enterprise were stunning and impressive. Yorktown is a spherical space station (with the look of a snowball according to Bones) with an ingenious gravity system. A futuristic-looking artificial planet which resembled what we saw in "Elysium" and "Interstellar". And it's populated by all sorts of races and creatures. And I must admit, the fantasy of the creators is still alive and kicking when it comes to creating alien species.

Relocating the field of action to the surface of the planet Altamid was a smart move. The breakup of the crew in different groups and their attempts to regroup was a refreshing idea and contributed to the build up of tension. The warlike Krall (Idris Elba) has only one goal. And that's destroying the United Federation of Planets by using the Abronath biological weapon. A weapon designed by his ancestors who lost control over this destructive weapon. Despite the immense layers of makeup, Idris Elba managed nevertheless to show an appearance full of expressions. Krall looked as threatening as ominous. The most exciting and fascinating character was that of Sofia Boutella as the alien Jaylah who can stand her ground in confrontations and also has some technical skills. What stood out were the various humorous situations and dialogues. Simon Pegg's contribution I suppose.

What bothers me the most about a movie like "Star Trek beyond", is the casualness when solving certain issues. The technical (unintelligible) lingo is being used again at that moment. So, warpspeed isn't functioning anymore? No problem. They'll momentarily redirect some energy from the warp core to the impulse engines. Want to bring the compressors from a wreck back to life? One well-aimed shot with your laser gun will take care of that. And during a chase at the speed of light, a problem occurs that needs a quick solution. Again no problem. A blueprint is projected (and I guess they know its content by heart) and before you know it a ready-made solution is being offered . But isn't this part of the charm of a legendary phenomenon like Star Trek? Otherwise they never could have gone boldly where no one ever set foot before!

Beyond comprehension and logic. Why on earth would you go on a quest to obtain some rare super weapon, when you clearly already possess a weapon that will do the job?

The first two reboots are brilliant imo, however this edition of the franchise is very average. Idris Elba is wasted as a poor villain and dont get me started on those poor cgi creatures at the beginning. Its worth watching, however youll be disappointed if you compare it to the previous two.

It doesn't compare to Into Darkness in the slightest bit. The whole vehicle feels lackluster and bored with a paint-by-numbers villain and plot. Blows my mind that this one is more highly rated on RT than its predecessor.

Maybe I just didn't notice it in the previous films but Karl Urban seems to struggle enormously portraying Dr. McCoy. His lines are delivered with a touch of overacting and he just can't seem to dial it in. It's like he's trying to play Deforest Kelley and not Bones, and believe me there is only one Deforest Kelley.

James T. Kirk is given an attitude and toys to match like he's actually James Bond, while the rest of the cast form an ever-more sarcastic band of plucky adventurers that are tonally ripped from Tony Stark lines from the Avengers. I'm pretty sure some of this film was ripped from Goldeneye.

This is not Star Trek; It is Star-Trek-flavoured action vignettes. Vignette one: Kirk and Bones talk life in a reference to Wrath of Khan. Vignette 2: The Enterprise crew make a daring escape that they survive thanks to the miracle of plot armour. Scotty says something silly. The Captain shouts an order. Spock is weird. A villain inexplicably monologues. Ok, and now more plotless action.

The plot is virtually non-existent with the crew shuffled forcibly from one contrived maguffin-led adventure to the next. Idris Elba is utterly wasted.

Avoid this movie. Go watch TNG. Remember why people like Star Trek: its discussion of the human condition.

I will say that the sets and costumes are fantastic.
