I understand that Star Wars changed the face of contemporary cinema, but as a child of the new generation, I find it hard to connect with it as a film, I find it a bit shallow beyond the visuals and story, preferring sci-fi's with more substance like Alien, Blade Runner, Twelve Monkeys or Moon. It's hard to relate to, given the generational hype.IreneAdler
A classic, of course, that's for sure... but I do enjoy the newer parts a lot more. It's not just the effects, it's also the actors... I guess I'll never be a fan of Mark Hamill or Carrie Fisher...Nice story, though.

Best star wars movie.......so farDodo199999
I personally disliked it because it doesn't give a shit about the universe in wich the story takes place. It seems that the only reason the movie takes place in space is to make the spaceship fights! It's so antropocentric even if it hasn't had to be! Even 2001: A Space Odyssey is less antropocentric and it shows no other race than the human one! Harrison Ford is acting like some crazy Texan wich somehow learned to drive a spaceship, it seems so out of contest! So, if the movie doesn't give a crap about himself and just want to arrive at the good ending, why should I give a crap? I know, that's a classic, but even stinky armpits are a classic, it doesn't mean it is great!ArkRyan
Timeless masterpiece and one of the best universes created. Hero's journey defined by this film for next generations.Puchoo
Here's some money, go see a Star War.Siskoid
I respect A New Hope as an incredible achievement - how it presents a de facto world with minimal exposition, how it's completely different from science fiction movies at the time, etc. - but it suffers from over-familiarity. I've seen it and references to it so often by now that I basically knew every beat, every line, and not because they are particularly original (in fact, I find the dialog in all the Star Wars films very ordinary indeed). And then there are the changes wrought by Lucas in the Special Edition and even more of them for this 2004 DVD release (to bring it "in line" with the new trilogy, ugh), which I find intrusive and annoying.DisneyStitch
What else is there to say, I mean it's Star Wars. Even though Empire is more highly rated for the majority of fans I think I like this one better. Forget all the special editions and changes that Lucasfilm has made over the years, watch the original theatrical version if you have the chance. It's a landmark film in so many ways, and the start of a mythos that would be known on a global stage. One of the many aspects that has stuck out to me throughout the years is its remarkable ability to throw you into a situation and everything feels natural. The first time you watch this it just flows, you don't feel as if you're missing out from not knowing any background information.Aeon Rio
Slightly overrated. But I get it. As a late 70s film, the movie is great.Toastinator

I was finally able to get ahold of a copy of the despecialized version and I love it so much more than the one that is widely available. I’m not really into the other trilogies as much. They are too perfect, in terms of special effects, like everything else nowadays. It makes the films have less character. I like how this film seems more low-tech than the newer ones. I often wish we could go back to doing all the effects in camera, rather than on a computer. I want to see weirdness. I want to see the human touch and not a program.Showing items 16 – 27 of 27
