Idk, at first it seems weird or even boring, but a second view on this may be enough to get the essence of the movie, how fucked up travis is, which is really interesting, and i quite liked it. Found out that the "you're talkin to me" scene was a De Niro rehersal and the cameras were on, turning out to be one of the most iconic scenes ever, and some of the cabs conversations weren't scripted, don't know if that's true. So yeah, classics are classics. There's a reason for that.
It wasn't like a cabbie ride around newyork, it was more like going through the bylanes of de niro's mind. The movie encapsulated newyork in its most decadent state. I was so drawn by its hazy camerawork that travi's mental image, his hatred, his disappointment, his helplessness, his inability to comprehend the meaning of his existence and the scum that breeds around him everything was projected on my mind. The thematic change in the hollywood movies of 1970's-1980's had dished out a lot of spectacular movies, movies which were honest in the treatment of their characters, their potrayal was more matured and auteur's style stood for something and this being is definitely one of the most glorious movies of that spectacular era.Pure Masterpiece.
Taxi Driver is a very well made film with some of the most iconic scenes in movie history. The entire crew, and especially director Martin Scorsese and actors Robert De Niro and an astonishingly young Jodie Foster, does a splendid job in bringing this tale of a latent psychopath to life. My only gripe with the movie is that it was a bit too gloomy and depressive to watch, especially since I saw it once before, a long time ago, and remembered the final outcome. I respect the craft on display here, but it will never be a favourite of mine. Perhaps tales of brooding psychopaths are just not my cup of tea.
A masterpiece by all means. DeNiro is one hell of an actor and this movie proves it.
.
But then again I personally believe it should've ended when he was lying down wounded on the couch; that would've definitely made it even more perfect than it already is. And although it is known that the ending is Scorsese's own commentary on how the media tends to glorify psychopaths and make heroes out of them. I still stick to my opinion as to how the movie should have ended.
gosh, deniro is something isn't he? loved the film, no, adored it. the psychology behind travis is confusing and subtle, keeping you intrigued in his character throughout. and boy, does that that intrigue pay off. i initially feared that having seen all of scorsese's newer films and being accustomed to there style, that this film would feel too distant. this is most definitely untrue. 10/10
If you try to understand that he is the marine who survived from battle vietnam and could not settle his life everything in a mess. You would get the Mr.Scorsese it is fantastic movie but you need to get what he builded in the story. With De Niro performance and little Judie. In my opinion it's quite piece of art.
Although it's a pretty slow film and not a lot of big events take place for a while, it is powerful and I think through Travis' narration the viewer has the ability to feel a personal connection to him whether their views are the same as his, and it really draws you in, which made it a better viewing experience for me personally.
Also De Niro does a fantastic job in it.
I really like this movie, but i did find the constant replay of that saxophone to be really irritating, found it difficult to listen to it during a second viewing of this film.
