I think the horror-category is the hardest to scour for good films. I've been doing this a lot recently, and I've been disappointed with A LOT of the films I ended up seeing.

But The Autopsy of Jane Doe really did it for me! It's well made, atmospheric, nicely shot and scored, and the actors do a good job (nice to see Emile Hirsch in a horror flick!). There are definitely elements that'll split the waters among the audience, but overall I'd absolutely recommend it.

There’s a reason why Andre Ovredal is beginning to make a name for himself as a Horror Director and it’s on strong display in “The Autopsy of Jane Doe”. He crafts a film of remarkable tension, rich mood and lived in characterization. Along with writers Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing, Ovredal works to build a greatly detailed sense of this small slice of the world we’ll be inhabiting.

Horror is often fond of the single location story (as much for budgetary reasons as any other) but it’s not so easily accomplished as well as it is here. Beautifully shot. Excellent effects work. Well scored. There’s a lot to like here. Including the strong performances by Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch as the father/son duo tasked with performing the titular autopsy. Speaking of the object at the center of this story, anyone could be forgiven for overlooking the work of Olwen Katherine Kelly as our “Jane Doe”. After all, she spends the entirety of her screen time as a corpse. But given that the vast majority of what we see is her and not fakery, and since all of that time is spent completely nude, one can’t help but admire her fearlessness and body control.

For the first half of this movie I was sure I was watching a modern classic. Then the rising tension crescendoes and the film take some more traditional and obvious turns. An over-reliance on jump scares via music sting permeates. Some twists occur that appear quite cheap and a lot of the character momentum gets stymied by genre necessities. There’s also the fact that they absolutely waste the wonderful Ophelia Lovibond in a thankless role. She’s initially introduced as a compelling character only to be shrugged off once the film ramps up.

Even with those reservations I would heartily recommend “Autopsy”. It’s a great mood piece that’ll easily click with anyone who appreciates good, spooky Horror.

Such an interesting and unique way of showing the "evil one" in the movie. I guess that's the reason I liked this one so much. 4 years 2 months ago
