The ending is a bit rushed, but I really enjoyed the slow-burn lead-up to it. Kirsten Dunst was a standout. Good Lord, the sexual tension in this film...

Some have said on other sites that this film is too slow. To those I would say - then don't ever watch Peter Weir's Picnic at Hanging Rock. This film follows that atmospheric feel right down to the steady buzz of the locusts in the tall grass.

If you think Colin Farrell is hot and enjoy the aesthetic of Civil War Southern women living in a sort of tiny ecosystem alone in the wild, threatened by gunshots on the horizon, then check this one out. Beautiful to look at and the tension between the characters is done really well. Not quite soul-touching, but it has its merits to be sure.

Sofia Coppola...I like her more and more with each film I see of hers. Often classified as boring or too slow and while I can't say that's not valid to some degree, I think there's just a lot of subtext that goes largely unnoticed by those that feel that way; or perhaps they simply find the subtext boring and slow as well. This film looks great and it's got a lot in common with Picnic at Hanging Rock on those terms. But this film tackles different ideas, the power of women in many forms, how this power can cause them internal struggle or bring them together. We see them compete and cut each other down in the presence of a new potential mate, each using their sexual power to try to distinguish themselves from the others. However when they become threatened they come back together to eliminate their threat. It's a wonderful showcasing of the complex nature of femininity. Another solid effort from Sofia Coppola IMO.

I love Sofia Coppola, but the 1971 Siegel/Eastwood version is so much better. Darker, cynical, more tension and just overall a much more rich and interesting experience. This was too tame and lame.

I don't know when it happened, but Colin Farrell can act. Nicole Kidman figured it out by 1990, if not earlier, and shows no sign of slowing. I enjoyed this movie built on expectation. Drinking 3 or 4 Guinnesses during will only help.

The bird's song drove me crazy...I should say the loop of bird's song...
such a boring movie. The virgin suicides was far better.
