The Big Short is an amazingly funny film about the credit and housing collapse of 2008, which surprising on two fronts. First, millions of Americans losing their homes and the Global economy taking a hit isn't a laughing matter (we here in New Bruswick didn't feel it much because things were already pretty terrible - I'm not being snarky, studies actually show exactly this). And second, who the hell understands the financial mumbo-jumbo required to make sense of this news story. Well, the only way you're going to watch a movie about this is if the bitter pill is coated in loads of sugar, and once you do, you'll realize the way Big Business works is completely absurd - not just Kafka absurd, but Monty Python absurd - and the movie knows quite well that the banks got away with it by using jargon you or I can't understand, and makes fun of that. The way the movie teaches us the salient points is pretty great, and preys (as the editing often does) on the public's propensity for getting distracted by other things. I came out of the theater better informed and dreamed of financial crises all night. Extremely funny (Ryan Gosling especially), but sad as well, it runs the gamut - probably one of my favorite movies of the year.

A well-made movie with some sharp characterization. Takes on a book that's a real challenge for adaptation and successfully creates a narrative that is (relatively) easy to follow, albeit not a traditional film narrative. Adam McKay's direction is strong enough to keep the focus of the film in line, but you do occasionally lose track of key parts of the film.

great movie, very entertaining, and super funny in parts. but! you will leave the theatre feeling more than a bit sick. (which is sorta the point.)

Considering the dry subject material- this movie does a great job of being entertaining and thought-provoking. Great casting with lots of cameos keep the movie interesting, and it's a real change from McKay's usual comedies.

I can't believe that this came to us from the same guy responsible for Stepbrothers and Anchorman.

The Big Short is one of my favorite movies of 2015. Adam McKay of Anchorman and Step Brothers fame makes his non-comedic debut and he really hits it out of the park with his direction. Reminiscent in style to The Wolf of Wall Street, but with a voice completely its own, The Big Short takes a hard to understand subject (finances) and with help from a sharp script and convincing performances from Gosling, Bale, and Carrell makes it all seem relatively simple, simple enough to follow for two hours, anyway.

My biggest issue with it is that a lot of the comedy fell flat for me, and I didn't really find blatant "jokes" necessary and kind of awkward in placement, but that's small potatoes really. The Big Short is a top five film of the year for me, where in addition to being entertained you might just learn something too.

It's no easy task to distill something as complicated as the sub-prime mortgage crisis into roughly two hours of easily digestible Hollywood entertainment. As it stands though, this is a very fun flick, with a powerful ensemble cast, that sheds light on some of the causes of this century's greatest economic crisis.

This is a good film. Not a great film. But that is not the point.

This movie should make you angry. Its truth is sickening. This story should make people take to the street and demand action on Wall Street's inequities and outright frauds.

As a film, The Big Short is fine. It is led by a very talented cast who make the subject matter palatable and comprehensible to an average audience. The script is not exactly sizzling, but its got zest. What's strange about the script is its self-awareness. Characters regularly break the fourth wall, and while this should be funny, the audience is often so intrigued at understanding the level of bullshit that Wall Street got itself ensnared in, that the jokes are missed. I feel that Adam MacKay actually should have resorted to a few more of his traditional slapstick antics to inject humour that wasn't tied to exposition.

That said, the overall film is decent to very good. The only problem is the editing and cinematography. The film is mostly spot on save for some editing mistakes and awkard shot choices. With a bit more effort in cinematography, this could have been the best picture of the year. Instead, it's just very good with mediocre filmmaking.

Next time, McKay should just do the script and bring in a better cinematographer.

A well done film .. At the time, all those clever 'cut away' style explanations to try and explain all the financial gobbledygook (hey the spell check accepted that word!) left you feeling you knew what was going on .. but next morning , Go on, I challenge you to explain it all to someone who didn't go and see it as well.. what is a CDO or a credit swap?.

inside job but way more personal. actors do a great job, movie is directed well enough that you stop thinking about it as a movie and see the actual story.

and it is horrifying.
