An unflinching and fairly nuanced look at child abuse in the Catholic orphanage system. While the film is a fictional account, its starkness and the strength of its performances mark it with a strong sense of authenticity. To its credit, the film doesn't shy away from delving into the troubled mind of Brother Lavan, whose rage, shame, pride and desperation are portrayed masterfully by Henry Czerny. Perhaps most disturbingly, the film aptly critiques the powerful institutions of justice, church and government that not only allowed space for these abuses to take place in, but systematically covered them up while managing to evade all accountability.
