"The first draft of the screenplay was an adaptation by Gilbert Adair of his own novel, The Holy Innocents. During pre-production, Bertolucci made changes to it: he "peppered the narrative with clips from the films he loves" and dropped homosexual content – including scenes from the novel that depict Matthew and Théo having sex – which he felt was "just too much"."

Brother and sister is one thing, but gay dudes... you gotta draw the line somewhere.

Spectacular, beautiful, sensitive film, wonderfully shot, incredibly well acted, and also Eva Green's breasts.

Since Donna Tart's The Secret History is unlikely to be adapted to the big screen one has to turn to this. It's a bit pompous and vain, but it is equally as enchanting.

This is what would have happened if Tarantino were French.
