Policeman: "Does your father work at the embassy?"
Philippe: "No. He's ambassador."
Rose (the prostitute): "Oh! I know your daddy!"

Absolutely brilliant little film. I can't think of a single thing I'd change in it. Director Reed makes the most out of the slightest details and mixes dread with humor with a skill that rivals Hitchcock's. The bewildering sensations of childhood have never been so honestly and accurately portrayed. After loving this and The Third Man, I'm making it a mission to watch more of Reed's work.

Wow, amazing film. I can't believe this isn't on more lists. The child actor is fantastic, and his confusion poignant and engaging. And lots of great Hitchcockian suspense.

I disagree with most of these comments; it was the adults I wanted to smack upside the head. They were so self-absorbed that it seemed they didn't realize what kind of pressure they were putting on Phillipe. I had nothing but compassion for him through out the film, especially in that scene where they were on the steps interrogating him.
Overall I really liked this movie (The Third Man still being my favorite) but I am going to have to have to watch more of Reed's films.

Great film but why the hell is it on the noir list?

Yeah, while it's good, it's not exactly noir.

What a surprise to discover this gem! I disliked the kid from the beginning and by the last scene I would have personally hit him over the head with a flower pot.

The mixture of suspense and humor is beautiful. Definitively one to watch again. Le cinéma selon Reed.
