Impressive cast and nice story. Very good for the first 120 minutes but the final act is unnecessary long. All the preparation for the escape are really fun. Despite the setting and the final result, the movie is far from being dark and for that reason it feels like it's not completely able to tell something significant about POW as it focuses more on adventure. But you can't escape from McQueen coolness!

Enthralling and beautiful.one of the finest movies ever made about WW-II.an altogether different take on war movies.engrossing from the start.great ensemble.splendid job in keeping the viewer hooked on without dramatising the incident or portraying it in a heroic way.A well grounded movie still thouroughly interesting and enjoyable.

In what is one of the most entertaining casts in cinema history, the great Richard Attenborough shines above the rest. The man can do more with his right eye than McQueen can do with his entire face + arms, and yet it's the latter star whose presence we associate with this film. A mistake in my opinion. Steve McQueen was a mediocre actor at best, nothing more than a cool presence who was genetically fortunate enough to have wrinkled well with age. He also happens to be a narcissistic douchebag, and it seems the production suffered as a result of his involvement (read the IMDB trivia section for The Great Escape if you want to know what I mean.)

My simple review is that this is a spectacularly enjoyable film, but I guess everybody already knows that.

Having just read the Paul Brickhill's book it was based on, I have new found love for this movie. It is surprisingly accurate, and on rewatch I found a lot of fascinating details I hadn't noticed before. Not only is The Great Escape a thrilling and insanely fun movie (with one of the best casts ever), it is also a tribute to the men in Stalag Luft III.

A compelling tale of real-life events that unfold with a sense of urgency not often duplicated in today's cinema. The only criticism I can fire at it is that, on just one viewing, it can be difficult to learn who all the characters are.
