A flawed masterpiece. A fantastic ensemble cast that individually reflect upon a somber mood of death with poignancy and grace. Trouble is, it's overlong and slightly ruins the incredible mood built in the first hour by becoming sentimental. That said, the individual performances from Tom Hanks, Clarke Duncan, and David Morse in particular are all excellent, the music is solid, and (be warned) there's a sequence of pure horror in the middle that certaintly got my attention. A good sister piece to Shawshank.

A juvenile, plodding hodgepodge of the sanctimonious babble as seen in Mockingbird, etc. The same kind of quintessentially American self-hating crap that is now mass produced by Netflix and co.
Barely any story and a cartoonish depiction of good and evil. Asinine, jejune, preachy, and three hours fucking long!
My heartstrings were decisively not pulled.
