   I just finished the book, then watched this and the 1963 version back to back. The old film and the book have a particular style that this film specifically moved away from. The house itself is a character in the book. Here it's just unnecessarily big and impractical.
   
   So you need to treat this film as separate from the source, because the story is changed, the characters barely resemble their originals, and the tone and feeling is vastly different. I honestly think someone else had written this as a stand alone original haunted house movie, and at some point in production they did a rewrite to make it vaguely based on the Haunting of Hill House.
   
   It's also a product of its time. CGI was the new big thing. The Mummy (the Brendan Fraser one) came out the same year and you can see the same CGI faces coming out of everything. It's all a bit gratuitous.
