Though a fan of the books and the TV series when I was a teenager (the radio series wasn't available to me yet), the 2005 Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy film doesn't quite do it for me. The problem, I think, is that the big budget movie format has replaced much of the humor with spectacle. And while the spectacle is very pretty and impressive, spectacle is not inherently funny. Obviously, it wouldn't have done to make a movie where we consistently go to the Guide and its absurd definitions, but when it does, that's when the film is genuinely funny! Though I have some attachment to the way the TV series did the Guide's imagery, I quite like the film's animation too. The moments when the narrator/Guide takes over are, yes, the best parts. Oh, and the dolphin musical number. And the Improbability Drive effect. A great cast (although Mos Def? really?) sometimes let down by a zany pace, a few neat references to the TV version (try to spot the original Marvin!), but I think viewers less familiar with the book will come out of it simply thinking Marvin was oh so cute, and ah, that's where the babel fish and "42" come from. For those who did think highly of the book(s) or radio original, I think the Infocom text-based adventure game has yet to be dethroned.Jashezilla
Loved Martin Freeman and Sam Rockwell but hated everything else. Story sucks, the rest of the acting sucks, the special effects suck and everything else that could suck sucks. How's this movie so popular?fakirfikir
An amazing movie with a perfect cast.Characters fit so well to each actor and actress.

You like or really dislike, there's no in between with this movie.I knew nothing about Hitchhiker's Guide (except that the answer is 42) and so this movie showed me this universe and taught me what it was. I found it hilarious and I completely loved it! Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent was perfect! And then I do not doubt that the book might be better than this movie.

Horrible adaptation failed to establish the tone of the books or the radio series. (2)Mos Def should definitely get a medal for somehow landing acting gigs when he is perfectly devoid of both talent and skill. Martin Freeman seems just confused all the time (possibly on purpose) but not at all like the Arthur Dent we know from the books. Sam Rockwell and John Malkovich however, are brilliant.
I of course realize that this was always an impossible project. You could never do the books justice on screen, so they didn't try for a faithful adaptation. The general story is somewhat retained but in most areas, generous liberties were taken to make it work in a very shortened version, brutalized into a cinematic experience. Nice try, but doesn't really hold up.
Perhaps I'm biased from having grown up with the books and they being personal favorites. Scratch 'perhaps', I'm definitely biased.
Overall, it fails pretty horribly but it has some shining moments where you can forget the plethora of shortcomings and, if ever so briefly, really enjoy the unmistakable Douglas Adams humor. The universe robbed us of his brilliant comedy genius way too early and we are worse off for it.
This movie should have been so much better, simply because he deserved it.

i have yet to read the book, but the film was hilarious.daisyaday
Yes it's goofy and the plot is disjointed but it is sooo funny. And really, no movie could encompass the books.kds_randomwords
The book and, the series, changed my whole view of life, the universe, and everything. Oh, and math. I didn't know 6*9 could ever equal 42.This movie had no chance of ever living up to that. But I still loved it.

It could never have lived up to the book, so stop demanding it.rainy
I watched it when I was like 8... Don't remember a thing. Just remember that my father hated.Showing items 1 – 15 of 23
