Good thing my kids aren't old enough to realize how hard this remake sucked.

Look at this "dvdllr" user, saying the songs were not good. ROFL. These kind of people try to find meaning in crappy experimental movies with no plot, but dont realize the singing here was meant to be casual and just an homage.

I wonder why these people are so bitter about this movie. LOL.

The VFX was fantastic, but the film stinks.

Apart from anything else, there are only two female voices in the film, both of which only get about five minutes screen time max (and one of those fills the 'mother' role).

So basically, the film is 95% male, at minimum, and of the two minor female roles, one is a stereotype. I would not show this to children.

Awful.
Was I really the only person who was, at least partially, rooting for Sher Khan v the kid?

I prefer the 1994 adaptation. That had intrigue and a great cast of actors. It was more in line with the Secret Garden style movies being put out in the early to mid 90's that were realistic for the most part. Not song and dance shows. It took what seemed like an hour for the first song to come into this, but once it did, I checked out. Not like I was enjoying this film up until then anyway. I barely found this interesting, I can't imagine how a kid would be able to sit through this. At least the 90's remakes of old films didn't rely on pleasing fans. Look at the 1994 Jungle Book, not one song, not one overt nod to the original. It was just trying to be its own thing. The voyage through India was cool and the adventure was on par with an Indiana Jones movie. Whatever this was, it sure fell flat.

I thought this was a lovely remake, I don't know why so many people left such negative reviews on this. The casting was beautiful, the CGI was gorgeous, and the two songs were well done and well-placed in the film. Contrary to what Tiego Costa says in his review here, A movie doesn't have to be declared a musical or not a musical. Would you consider Lord of the Rings a musical, just because there was some lyrical recitation in it? They took the two most popular songs from the Disney animation and revisited them here, to great effect. The action was good, the story played out nicely, and the casting for this was a damn sight better than the upcoming 2018 one with an almost entirely white cast. If you didn't like this one, just get on with your life, and stop trying to force your limited opinion onto other viewers.

A remake that did not need to be made. The voice actors were all great and the CG was stellar.
However, the actor playing Mowgli was awful (did they realize he was the only human in the movie?), and the story was flat. They took the ensemble-musical template of the original and took out almost all the music…?
My kids enjoyed it, so maybe that's all that matters ($$$) but it hardly left an impression. We'll rewatch the original next time.

Terrible. Terrible, terrible, terrible. Terrible acting, terrible animation, terrible singing, terribly cliché and boring. Calling this film average is an undeserved compliment. This just sucks and is a waste of time and an insult to everyone with any sense of taste in movies.

This movie is a train wreck from start to finish! Mogli can't act even if he's life depend on it! The animal's are HUGE! What's up with that? Take the best parts of the original movie and butcher them like there's no tomorrow. The fact that you can hear on the voices of some of the "cast" that meh I'm here because it's another paycheck. (how much did Scarlett Johansson got pay for one scene, or was it two?). And many more. Avoid this cr@p and just watch the original one.

This movie sucked hard. It took itself way too seriously, and ultimately had no joy to it. From me, not one smile, not one laugh; just grimacing as two beloved songs from the cartoon are butchered by two tired-sounding men who can't sing them.

The CGI are amazing and the voice actors were all a good choice. Shere Khan was terrifying and right on the money. The movie scores many point just for taking me back to childhood.
At some moments the movie is too fast. Especially geographically the movie doesn't make any sense. While it doesn't hurt for most of the movie, the final scenes are a bit weak because of this.

Of all fairy tales adaptations I've seen so far ("Maleficent", "Snow white and the huntsmen" and "Jack the giant slayer"), this animated movie (it looks lifelike but it consists mainly out of groundbreaking digital animations) is the the most dazzling one. I don't want to sound too excited and shower Jon "Chef" Favreau with all the superlatives that I can think of for his directing work of , but in short this film was fantastic. Not only did this film throw me back to my childhood when my innocent eyes wandered over a large picture book and sympathized with the little Mowgli (Neel Sethi). But as an adult, I also stared at this beautiful film dumbfounded.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with this restyled Disney version and I can't think of a single thing to criticize. Everything looks lifelike. The jungle and overall scenery made out of millions of pixels, is phenomenal. The inhabitants of this jungle look stunning. At times I doubted whether they were digital creations or the real thing. Even their character traits are conforming. And in between all these animal activities, one single human creature moves around. Looking at it afterwards you can easily say this was a superhuman performance of this little guy. Because successfully navigating in between these digitally created fellow players wasn't easy I reckon. In terms of empathy, this young lad thrills. It's not only the design department who'll walk away with the honors. It's also the character study and the perfect mix of action and philosophical, emotional moments that make it appealing to all ages. The boundary of creepiness wasn't exceeded (my daughter thought it was terribly exciting though) and it isn't really childish at the same time. I honestly have to admit that during the wonderful scene with Mowgli and Baloo singing "The Bare Necessities", I had to wipe away an upcoming tear. Pure nostalgia.

The movie hardly deviates from the original, well-known story so to speak. According to me the only part that differs was the denouement. In my youth book, lightning struck a tree and Mowgli drove out the terrible and dangerous Shere Khan with a burning branch. Also some new features are introduced. The daily life of the pack of wolves is illustrated in detail. Certain laws were incorporated into the story such as "The Water Truce" that takes effect the moment a terrible drought occurs. And here and there are some amusing additions like the favor Mowgli does for Baloo during which he uses his human ingenuity to solve the problem. The comments of the agitated, little animals on the whole operation was extremely hilarious. And there are some masterful scenes in this film. I was most impressed about the chapter in the beautifully rendered temple where a colossal King Lowie reigns.

Not only a lot of energy was put into the visual aspect, but also in the voice cast. It felt like all voices of the elected actors fit perfectly with their characters. To bring this to a successful conclusion, they chose renowned actors: Ben Kingsley (Bagheera), Bill Murray (Baloo), Idris Elba (Shere Khan), Lupita Nyong'o (Raksha), Scarlett Johansson (Kaa) en Christopher Walken (King Louie). I was most impressed by Christopher Walken who apparently also has a very firm singing voice. The most amusing was that of Bill Murray. Not because of his timbre of course, but because of the textual content. So, nothing but praises for this embellished Disney Classic. Perhaps the movie isn't as enchanting as the original and the end result is a more exciting and darker version. I'd be glad when Disney would dig out the other classics, dust them off and transform them into such a visual spectacle as this wonderful film.

It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. For a kids' movie, it was pretty damn scary in places and the humour was really quite dark. The CG is fantastic, the animals exquisitely detailed, but it just didn't live up to all that hard work. The songs seemed like an afterthought, and they weren't long enough IMO.
