I am thrilled that we got to see more of Uhtred, Finnan and Sithric. Alexander Dreymon, Mark Rowley and Arnas Fedaravicius are stellar as usual, and so is Harry Gilby in the role as Aethelstan. I wish they would have made another TV series instead of a film, because there is a lot happening and the pace is a little fast and a touch disjointed at times. Still, I would happily watch even more instalments of the story after this. In fact, I may just go back to the first episode and binge watch it all over again - for the third time. I've seen worse ways to conclude a series, but the writing in this really isn't worthy of the mostly excellent TV series, and it doesn't really do justice to anyone involved - especially the acting talent on screen.
If you're a TLK fan you'll watch it for obvious reasons, but as a standalone film it's fairly pointless and as a long-time fan it just feels misjudged.
I think an interesting comparison to this would be the Deadwood movie from a few years ago, which attempted to do something similar with a much-loved show that never got a proper ending; only, in that case it did it much better, with a far stronger script and a greater deal of fan service. Given Netflix's wealth and the fact the cast are still all around, it boggles the mind they didn't just do another season and tie off all these plot points properly. A huge wasted opportunity, sadly. 1 year 7 months ago
