Bullet points (all subjective, of course):
- The plot and the characters are all Hollywood clichés seen a million times over.
- The main villain is given no clear motivation, he's just "eeeevil" and generic. This is true of the protagonists as well, even if not as much. I believe this point to be the biggest offense against Seven Samurai. Knowing Fuqua, I really expected better characters.
- The town's preparation scenes are just like the montages from the Mighty Ducks style 90's sports movies (complete with the emotionally scarred player who leaves just before the big game but returns last second to even the odds).
- Clumsily thrown in jokes show no focus. Doesn't know whether it wants to be gritty/realistic or goofy.
- Forced political correctness - main characters forcibly include white, black, mexican, asian, native american (with an Adidas commercial on his face) and an overly strong, emotionally detached woman.
- Typical bombastic action scenes with no tension reminiscent of good westerns.
- Out-of-place score.
- Actors' portrayals and the scenery were alright. 7 years 11 months ago -

It was about time they hired a Native American actor for NA role in a mainstream film, but the good Indian v. bad Indian stereotype is still there. 7 years 3 months ago -

I question why hollywood bothers to make westerns anymore. I think they hate the genre. There is so little effort put into any of these characters because the writer assumes you know who they are already -- which is only true because they're all flatter than paper and completely predictable.
