I thought this was a great movie. A great find after all these years. The last movie for Gable and Monroe, and maybe their best emotional acting. All the characters are broken and flawed, drinking their pain away. That might have been the case in their real lives. Highly recommend.
Last films for both Gable and Monroe. Monroe's tragically confused character in the film is how I imagine she was in life, at this time. Apparently, the shoot was dysfunctional and awash in alcoholism from the director on down. Good film and a great piece of film history.
Whilst I believe Arthur Miller's screenplay leaves some room for I don't know, more purpose in the story? Each of the characters seem rather aimlessly floating about on the ranch, dealing with varying forms of depression and alcoholism, I was eagerly awaiting some sort of peak in the plot line which never really arrived. Despite this the performances of both Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe are awe-worthy. Monroe is so different to her usual 'dumb-blonde' typecast. She is strong, empathetic and loving. Equally, Gable is a dream man. Their 'romance' through the film and especially in the final scene is legendary and so satisfying to watch. Definitely 3/5 stars.
