There are definitely signs that this is a first feature. Not everything works. A lot of the shots are very first timer-y, they just don't function the way actual shots in films are supposed to. And its a large ensemble piece and not all the threads are that intersting or well achieved. My biggest problem is actually with the performances (not the performers). The direction for every actor is to draw out this unaffected, flat performance, but its so oppressive that they come full circle and become affected and falt.

With that said there is a ton that I admire about this flick. I like the naivety the film approaches relationships, romance and growing up. Its nice that the film isn't so obsessed with sex, its there, but its still a fairly mythical thing for this mixed age group, so much so that holding hands and kissing still holds a special place in their minds. And for that, I can forgive a lot and say that I kinda loved this and cannot wait for the director's next film, especially if he stays in the teen genre.

The real triumph of the film for me was was Claire Sloma as maggie. She's the most naturally gifted talent of the young bunch and is able to make the flat direction work for her and even rise above it a bit. She's adorable and could've carried the film in her own boldly bashful, naive way.
