Showed commendable promise at times, but all these Netflix action flicks are lacking something I can't quite put my finger on. Also, the music supervisor should be banned from the film industry.
Felt extremely angry while watching this movie. Predictable and it just pains that the old and wise Andy can't see what the viewers can plain and clear. So many tropes and cliches. Simple re-write of the script with some intelligence could have made it way better. Sad.
I respect comics writer Greg Rucka, but admit I've never heard of The Old Guard before Netflix dropped an adaptation on its service. Though a movie, it really felt like the pilot for a series. I don't just mean the ending that begs for a sequel (though it's part of it), but it uses the trope of dropping a rookie into a team of veterans so it can better explain the rules of the world just like you would at the start of a series. In this case, that's KiKi Layne as the newest immortal soldier to be "triggered" and to join Charlize Theron's secret army. At the same time, the team's been rumbled and Big Pharma is coming after them for the secret of immortality, and I almost wish the film were more concerned with how Charlize's character wants to give up because they haven't managed to make the world better, it's only getting worse. Instead, we get a very TV story that builds the team and reenergizes its leader. It's fine, but isn't exactly remarkable. Some good fights here and there, with a John Wick vibe, but more cursory. I did like the characters, especially the Crusader couple. And Charlize's battle axe is very cool. But ultimately, this is the first of a series, and if another one isn't commissioned, it'll be the weaker for standing alone.
Underrated.
It doesn't follow the usual action movie flow: no jokes, no saving the world, no huge explosions, no car chase. The movie spends a good amount of time on character relations and development. I usually don't like action movies and I was really impressed by this one as it was different. Stunts were well executed and fight scenes were pretty badass and easy to follow overall!
Lame script and predictable action flick. Highlander and John Wick put in a blender. Nice cast is wasted and besides a couple of ok action scenes, overlong and forgettable. STUPID use of music…..really beyond stupid
Fundamentally the same concept as another Netflix film, 6 Underground, only with fantasy immortals instead of off-the-grid mercenaries. It’s also as badly written, but lacks the gonzo charm of Bayhem, although the finale is better and there are some nice grace notes.

painfully formulaic with cringy attempts at cool one-linersMrDoog
Formulaic cliche riddled predictable garbage that's assembled with an inclusivity checklist. There was potential for a decent movie in there but it ended up being a complete waste of everyone's time.

Great film, hoping for a follow up. These kinds of topics like immortality don't get enough movies.atomicelmo
