Too much gratuitous blood and violence. And if it wasn't for all those slow-motion scenes, this movie could've been done in half the time.

Oh god, kill me if I ever have to watch this again. 3 hours of watching someone get beaten to a bloody pulp is not good cinema - it did however give inspiration to the south park episode 'Passion of the Jew' which was very funny - 'it really guilt trips you into believing'. Only good points - great cinematography and i did like the parts depicting the relationship between Jesus and Mary.

Those that are complaining about the level of blood and gore and lack of a plot are missing the point of this film. This movie is not the story of Jesus but of the sacrifice he made for mankind. He had the power to stop it at any time but chose to follow through out of love. The movie gives us a chance to really reflect and contemplate the magnitude and implications of that sacrifice without distraction. The gore is not gratuitous and for our entertainment. It's just the horrible reality of the event.

If I wasn't over-familliar with the story of Christ's death, I would have no clue about what was going on. It is weakly told and is structual bad. The acting is so over the top that I found myself laughing often. The phasing is all over the place and the flashbacks amounts to little in the long run.

The only redeemable thing I found about the movie was the make up (Satan has a really interesting design that capture the feeling of both man and woman) and the make up on christ at the cross was good, especially if you are familliar with different paintings of the event.

Sometimes genius, sometimes far from it.

-The Mary stuff is really transcendent and terrific. She's the heart of the movie in so many ways, which makes sense, given the theological background this particular interpretation is steeped in.

-The Satan stuff rarely, if ever, works. (It almost works for the suicide.)

-The flashbacks are especially effective and I wish they were utilized even more. They provide necessary context for the passion elements without leading to exposition heavy stuff. They also help us relate to the Man of Sorrows - his life wasn't always this. There were joes and smiles and lessons that none of them could understand at the time. Also, the editing is at its best in these sequences.

-The torture stuff is hard to watch. I don't know if it's always necessary but it did elicit a lot of "STOP"s from me being yelled at the television. And the crucifixion brought hearty crying from me.

-The actor who plays John is quite good (even with essentially no lines!)

-I don't know if the wall-to-wall music is effective. It ends up being more distracting than helpful.

Glad I saw it. "Gospel According to St. Matthew" is still better.

So Jesus gets beat up for half an hour and then half of the movie we see him walking carrying the cross and falling over a bunch of times. Huge disappointment.

I think there is a story about Christianity in there somewhere but it is hard to spot under all that blood and gore. Torture porn at its worst.

You guys are damn right. Just because Jesus suffered for a couple of days doesn't mean I should suffer for three hours long

Bad movie. Overly sentimental, too gory for its purpose and lacking in story (or explanation of the story).

Sure it was gory, sure it was drawn out, but that's what really happened to Jesus, if not worse. This isn't a movie just trying to make money and show us a good story, it's a movie that shows us the true horror and brutality of what really happened, and it's very effective.
