I enjoyed it, but wasn't Michael Cera really available for this one?

I went into this hoping for greatness. I hated it for about 40 min, then all of a sudden it started to get better. Its both wonderful and terrible. How is that possible?

It is very much so a coming-of-age film. I would say it's one of the better ones in its genre that I've watched, but certainly not the best.

There were some bits where I nearly teared up, and others where I audibly chuckled, but it was nothing to write home about in the end. Like I said, it is very much a standard coming-of-age movie. I did enjoy the last few minutes though, they put me in an uplifting mood as a fellow teenager and are certain to put adults in a nostalgic mood as former teenagers.

I expected a lot from the book after reading so many great things about it and ended up disappointed so going into the movie I had low expectations, but it was better than I thought it would be. I think Logan Lerman's portrayal of Charlie is what really made me like the movie.

@Calabro: You are indeed very special if you needed to piss blood from Juno, Inception & Hugo. You should go and see a doctor. Or maybe stick to the 1950's and earlier.

I wasn't expecting much from this movie and it wasn't exactly a masterpiece. But it did manage to create a special kind of atmosphere. I must admit I cried quite a bit in certain scenes, but mostly because I was reminded of my own teenage years. Worth a watch if you've read the book, otherwise it all will feel a bit out of place.

Based on all the good reviews it got I thought I was in for a treat. I haven't been this let down since Drive.

Blew me away. I was expecting it to be good, but not this good. Having heard and read a lot of reviews, I thought there would be some sense of a throwback to 80s comedies where female characters aren't all 'hot' and the concept of a teen film doesn't have to involve projectile vomiting and purile humour. This is a fantastic film about teenagers that will probably appeal more to thirty-somethings. The acting is uniformly excellent and though I struggled a little with the fact that these characters are familiar with The Shaggs and Nick Drake but not David Bowie's 'Heroes' (which IS entirely possible in a pre-internet age), overall it worked beautifully.
