If you look at this movie as a whodunnit, yes, its ending proves disappointing.
However, the themes of obsession and jealousy are at its core. In that light, this ending is brilliant and shows what rivalry can do to people.
Perhaps the reveal could have been a bit more graceful, making it seem less convoluted, but I think that would take away from the shock its has at the end.
I really think very few directors besides Nolan could pull this off.
When I first saw this movie, I couldn't stop thinking about it for almost two days following it. THAT is the mark of a truly great film. For those that like this sort of film, the word mesmerizing seems apt to describe its effect.
"I just can't get over the sense of feeling cheated by the insertion of science/fantasy as the pivotal plot point -- an alien invasion would have seemed just as out of place." Quite how i feel...
