Just saw this movie for the first time, and I thought it was really good! The overall cinematography and use of color and lighting was amazing, and it was a beautiful movie to watch. The boy was amazing IMO, he did a fantastic job considering his age. My only complaint was the last fifteen minutes or so.
Once the offending party (the dad) was dead, and they'd found Samara's remains, it really seemed like maybe she would be at peace and everything would be fine. I think if it ended like that it would've been fantastic, but instead it did a 180 and went back to her killing people. It wasn't needed.
Off to watch Ringu now, see how they compare to each other. But! 8.5/10, honestly.
15 years later and this film still scares the piss out of me.
Extremely unpopular opinion, but I consider this film scarier than the original. I liked Ringu, but The Ring instilled a feeling of dread and uneasiness throughout the whole entire film for me that the original did not. Even now I'm still on the edge of my seat, anxiously waiting to see what happens next. The background "music", the lighting, the subliminal messages, and oh god those sounds only enhance that fear.
The only real complaint I have is
Samara's face reveal. It was incredibly disappointing, and still is. Whenever I see it my fear shoots down quite a bit, because it really is quite silly. Ringu handled Sadako's face beautifully, and I wish that the remake had done the same with Samara.
, and I couldn't help but find the kid incredibly annoying.
Otherwise I absolutely love it. It traumatised me as a kid, but now I enjoy the feelings of fear that it gives me. It's rare for a film to frighten me, so I cherish the ones that do.

Not horrible, and the landscapes are pretty (but damp). Still, not as creepy as the Japanese original.deadendjob
A decent remake.
