UTTER SPOILER ALERT..

Seriously, do not read on until you have seen the film...

WHAT!?

What on earth is the moral behind this one? The bratty girl breaks in, vandalises, steals.. and it's the bears that get shot?
And then returns to the house to loot the place?

Or is that missing the point? is this really a 'very ahead of it's time' political satire? I mean.. the hunter, well, has more than a passing similarity to Teddy Roosevelt.. and this was made not too long after - well within popular memory - of the 'Drawing the line' incident....Is Potter making avery damning critic of US imperialist / militarist policy? Or am I trying to read too much into it?

Something lynchian happens in the middle of this film, bookended by absolute averageness. The beginning of the film is so 'of its time' and so like any other emerging cinema experimentation you could shrug it off for any of the hundred others.

Then something absolutely absurd happens. The film warps into a dreamlike scene that drums anxiety. It's hypnotizing, and then it ends.

And you are back to the mundane film that you started watching. That ends like any other mundane film of its time.

SPOILERS! I'm sure this was meant as a happy ever after. The girl gets everything and back then sympathy for animals was not as strong as today. It plays like a horror film today, where the humans are the bad guys!
