"Beautiful" and compelling war drama, just too many characters and familiair faces show up and do nothing. But great one.BigAwesomeBLT
Slower than a slow thing covered in slow.Spent a lot of time going, "Oh hey, it's him. Oh hey, It's that guy..."
There is a decent, beautifully shot, 1.5 hour film in there somewhere.

It's amazing how director Terrence Malick manages to bring about a very lyrical way of portraying life and death. A unique war film, unlike others that are jingoistic. The applied technique of multiple narrations perfected the film, something that enables the audience to metaphorically hear both sides of the story. Not every soldier has a thirst for the enemy's blood, but not every soldier is as patriotic as another. Every man definitely fights his own war.BadFluffy
A rare inside look at war and battle from the hearts of men who lay their lives down in them. Beautiful cinematography and superb acting from a large and mostly underestimated cast, as some of the best performances come from relatively unknown actors. Both tragic and poetic, philosophical and gritty, but never preachy or complacent. Some will be put off by the length but there's not a wasted scene.
Duke of Omnium
Pretentious and self-indulgent, despite gun battles and lush cinematography. I got the feeling that a lot of things that worked in the novel just didn't translate well to the screen (hence the voiceovers and the nearly three hour running length).Paper_Okami
Rips Saving Private Ryan a new one. Far more intelligent, thought provoking and beautiful.. The greatest American War movie ever made.george4mon
great film! it's interesting that several people here call this overrated because it's no.2 on this list of underrated films.http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/movie-pages/movie_under84.html
