I thought this was a really entertaining period piece. The scenery is well crafted and De Palma's direction well establishes the gritty and unpleasant world of Prohibition. The violence further proves that point. They're bloody and intense but it never goes too far. It sticks to a sort of old school but bloodier Howard Hawks aesthetic and I think it fits pretty well.De Niro is a bit hammy but nevertheless his usual brand of committed professionalism. Connery is a wonderfully fun Badass Grandpa and his presence makes you overlook the fact this clearly Scottish man is supposed to be Irish.
The only major problem I have with the movie is Kevin Costner. Oh my sweet jesus, he is so BORING! I was amazed at how any person could care less about anything.
And it's a shame because I can tell Elliot Ness is a good character on paper. When Capone one ups him time after time I can see where a different actor could bring the anger and frustration. Costner just doesn't. He is so emotionless and uncharasmatic that I couldn't care about his plight.
Even still, it is entertaining.

Kevin Costner's final line was hilarious.frankqb
Led with epic grandeur by the beautiful score by Ennio Morricone, "The Untouchables" is a straight-up cops and robbers film for the ages. Though it has its fair share of hammish acting, poor special effects and a predictable and boring script, the film is a fun, lovingly faithful recreation of the days of Al Capone and Elliott Ness. Stylish and cool, but not without problems and a vague sense of emptiness.nick121235
The soundtrack did not fit this movie at all and completely ruined a lot of otherwise not bad scenes.I was disappointed with the 'feel good hollywood' vibe and acting methods of a lot of the actors. Although this movie boasts some pretty renowned names (De Niro, Connery), and they did not give mediocre performances by any means, the weak and trite script coupled with their delivery style (surely the fault of the director De Palma) resulted in a piece of generic hollywood fluff. Really the only thing saving this movie from being a complete and utter disaster, in my eyes at any rate, is the stunning cinematography and the inclusion of a few visual De Palma tricks of the trade.
In the end I just feel let down, especially in light of what could have been had he opted for a more serious vibe like Carlitos Way, although The Untouchables is still ahead above The Black Dahlia- his worst film in my opinion.
It's just sad when a director you hold in high esteem releases something so bland.

Sad to say but: I did not enjoy this. The music was so out of place with all due respect to the magnificent Morricone. I felt like the events along with the music was trying to impose certain emotions on the spectator whereas these emotions were just not there. Too much relying on pathos. Also Costner was plain bland. DeNiro's scenes were good but, still the film remains dry.

A soppy, ill-judged, cringe-inducing trainwreck of a film. Morricone's score was totally out of place.RockHopper92
Costner was god-awful, the music was hammy, and the writing was mediocre. De Niro had some good moments, but I'd recommend skipping this one. Lawless is a better prohibition movie, and L.A. Confidential is a better cop movie. Watch one of those instead.ReVision
Not bad, but not great either. Comes with a big cast but with mediocre performances all around.Seriosity
Not a particularly good movie, but kind of worth it for the set pieces.Pauldro
The film's music was too disorienting to enjoy this filmhavrasador
Ennio Morricone, Sean Connery fighting and Robert De Niro as Al Capone are the best things of this movie, the rest is too predictible and Kevin Costner is a shit-head.Siskoid
I was surprised at how much of the imagery that comes to mind when I think of gangland Chicago came from The Untouchables, when I probably first and last saw it near its release, but I think it's even infected my memories of the Odessa steps scene in Battleship Potemkin. Though completely ahistorical, De Palma's gangster pulp is filled with memorable action scenes and cracking dialog supplied by David Mamet who obviously wanted this to be more of a morality play. It still is - as Elliot Ness' purehearted boyscout eventually gets pushed into doing things the "Chicago way" - but it's more exciting than what on the page. This is Kevin Costner before he was a big star, and he's a little raw at times, but it's also before he started grating on my nerves. You need him, but really, all the other members of the team are cooler from the young Andy Garcia to the streetwise veteran Sean Connery, but I think especially the Charles Martin Smith as the bloodthirsty accountant who has the key to putting Capone behind bars. On the villains' side, you have De Niro of course, but his assassin played by the lizard-in-human-skin Billy Drago is creepy as hell. I will say that some of the pulp elements can be a little silly (the courtroom scene, for example), but generally, this is a slick-looking, suspenseful crime picture with a strong ethical thruline. And heck, Morricone on score?!shitmovies
Boring and dull. A lot of talent wasted. De Palma seems to have more misses than hits the more you look into his ouvre.Self-fulfilling prophecy
Banal, naive, bad acting from almost every participator, not fitting music. 'Gangster Squad' is even worse, yes, but they are still both mediocre.DePalma is such an overrated director.
