I don't see how this could fail to blow a VU fan away. Todd Haynes channels the spirit of Jonas Mekas with the kaleidoscopic collage filmmaking, so the dedication at the end is so apt. I was moved to tears. Staggering, vital cinema for lovers of art that exists off the beaten path, which is what Lou, Warhol and the gang were all about. Five stars. 1 year 10 months ago -

There’s nothing mind-blowing here but it’s all very well put together and of course the songs are brilliant. I’m not sure there’s much to satisfy non-fans but then if you’re not a fan of The Velvet Underground, you should be, and surely most people would have at least a passing interest in this period of music and art? Kudos to Haynes for using my favourite Velvet track - the demo version of Ocean. 2 years 5 months ago -

I love The Velvet Underground. I love Lou. I love Moe. I love John Cale and Sterling Morrison and Andy Warhol and even Nico. This is a fine documentary-- it tries cool stuff with its editing and certainly has a lot of terrific material to work with and "sample". Of course the music is awesome. But the fact that this film is being put on end-of-the-year lists ahead of movies like Red Rocket, The Card Counter, Benedetta or Encanto (yes, the Disney film) shows that critics are just as predictable as audiences. You could premiere this in HBO, say it was directed by a no-name doc guy, maybe grab an Emmy nomination, then never think about the movie again. But because it was directed by Todd Haynes... and because it's about the Velvets... this above average Behind the Music episode is a top ten film of the year? Nope. It is not. Sorry. 2 years 2 months ago
