Cranston was excellent, Elle Fanning too. The rest of it.... terrible!
Awfully written (so many examples e.g the complete change of character Trumbo has towards his daughter on her birthday... i mean come on! it was such an extreme about-turn... so false)
uninspired casting (especially John Goodman. How many films has he played a movie executive in?? His scene when he smashed his office with a baseball bat was one of the worst i've ever seen.)
Some really poor decisions throughout
I could go on and on but i'll leave it there.

Trumbo tells an interesting story about the film business and is replete with good performances, but as a filmic experience, it's nothing revolutionary. A well told biopic that doesn't really go beyond the events it depicts, or become as good as the films Dalton Trumbo wrote. But as a look at how pictures were made in the 40s and 50s, and at the effects of the black list on those who landed on it, it's worthy. Casting today's actors as the past's can prove a little distracting (John Wayne always took me out of the film), but those performances weren't bad. Bryan Cranston, Diane Lane, John Goodman, Helen Mirren... nary a misstep. But yeah, I wanted more out of it, and maybe it's because the trailer was so witty, and maybe it's because Hail, Caesar! touched on some of the same things but really went for it, I don't know.

Plenty Hollywood stars doing amazing performances about one of the most turbulent episodes in US history.

I bet it won't have any recognition from Academy.
Nor even publicity.

At least, brings one of the best Bryan Cranston performances since Breaking Bad, after the worthless John Carter, Total recall remake & Godzilla.
