For better or worse, it's the most fucked up movie I've ever seen.

Even though everything about this film was ridiculous, I still found it very, very disturbing.

Very.

Essentially it's a silly mix of Silence of the Lambs + The Human Centipede.

Bizarre and awful in my opinion, and I'm really not one to shy away from disturbing stuff. Basically consisted of the classic dumb horror movie protagonist, bad Canadian jokes, and a really really impressively stupid backstory. I would say the only point the writer had in mind was to be disturbing, not necessarily in a good way, just shock and awe

wow, just...wow

Disturbing and funny. Whenever it gets too dumb, it gets funny to remind you that this psudo-horror film is really a comedy. Theres also something charming about Kevin Smith's writing and directing in scenes not involving the walrus. It's simple and engrossing, not as hypnotic as his earlier writings, but still fun to watch.

"This could've been way better." That was the first thing that went through my mind after seeing this. It's something I've experienced several times with Kevin Smith (except for his debut Clerks, which was just perfect). Tusk, the first part of a conceptual trilogy, is funny and inventive, but misses an original approach in writing. The unexpected take on body horror by Smith was something I loved very much, as well as Johnny Depp's quirky character Guy Lapointe. However, in general the movie was a bit too much hit and miss, especially in dialogue. Definetely one of those films that will generate its own following (like with everything Smith directs) and be called "underrated" several times. Not by myself though. Nevertheless I'm looking forward to the next two episodes: Yoga Hosers and Moose Jaws.

Once upon a time, Kevin Smith and his producer Scott Mosier improvised a most ridiculous body horror movie on a podcast, and seemingly on a dare, made the damn thing. Tusk is that film. At first one of Smith's shock jock comedies, it begins with a high-profile podcaster flying to Winnipeg to get a story he and his partner can gracelessly mock (and allow Smith his loving comedy tribute to Canada), but he stumbles on a madman with a twisted relationship to walruses. Some atmosphere starts to set in. Unfortunately, what happens next IS a ridiculous riff on body horror flicks like Human Centipede, but it doesn't really work tonally. If played entirely straight, it might have achieved a kind of art house splendor. As is, the cheesy earnestness of some scenes feels like a mistake. And while I know Kevin Smith loves his dialogues, there's just too much talking in this, often to repeat information the audience already has. Every conversation needs pruning. And then there's Johnny Depp, nearly unrecognizable as a French-Canadian detective, a silly caricature who wastes a lot of our time. His flashback to meeting the killer grinds things to an unforgivable halt. I'll give him points for trying to do something like this, but Smith needs a more ruthless editor than... (checks) himself.

Honestly I was so impressed my this movie. The content was so fucked up, but stylistically it was amazing. The cinematography was excellent, the acting was superb, and at times it was VERY reminiscent of Tarantino. Like I said, content was fucked up, but it was such a good film.
