A really interesting film about a man who enters prison with nothing and leaves with a lot more. While this wasn't the most original story, it was set in a intrigueing location with a variety in characters that had their own agendas. Tahar Rahim clearly steals the show as he grows through the film which is down to the characters that shape him. While it may be seen as long, it could of been cut a good 20-30 minutes but not that I minded as I was interested in the film throughout.

A densely brilliant prison drama with quite a bit of meat on its bones. Great films accumulate pressure and tension and eventually explode into a perfect storm of all the elements of the story coming together at the climax. When this happened in A Prophet, I got the chills similar to the first time I watched The Godfather. Perhaps it's not a stretch to call this one a masterpiece, too.

Much much better than I expected. Good acting, great direction and very grim, brutally realistic and interesting plot. Didn't notice 150 mn had passed.
Not sure what the people who say it's "overrated" are talking about but I'd like to know what movies they've seen recently because if they're better, I'd like to watch them.

Good movie, still would've chosen Das Weisse Band for best foreign language film of the year however.

Secret in their eyes is a good movie but this is class. Should have won Oscar hands down.

One of the best films I've ever seen; a great crime/mafia drama that can be ranked up with any of the ones that usually come to mind. Should have won the Oscar.

I get so confused with these kind of movies...who is who, who wants to kill who, who is outwitting who... But once I got the gist of it, I really got drawn into the story. Aside from the violence, it's a very well thought out plot with some great camerawork.

French drama following a naive young prison inmate, trying to survive. Grim & violent at times but always compelling. 8/10.

Wouldn't have been able to watch it all in one go. Really enjoyed it as two parts.

It's hard to understand that das Weisse band and Un prophète could not compete with 'the secret in their eyes'. Even an complete drunk and stoned jury SHOULD have seen that both movies are far superior.

Anyway, this film is a really realistic and intresting example.

frankqb is right. L'esquive is another hard movie to understand (I'm not a native french speaker) without subtitles, because of all the verlan they use.
