While depicting with disdain, the rigidity of the nationalistic culture of Japan, symbolized in the absurdity with which Jun, the houseboy, devotes himself to serving his masters and undertaking his studies, Poem is ultimately a film about the destruction posed by Western consumerist mentality on the values of Japanese culture.
