This guy is pretty messed up. The brutal images of child self-flagellation and defecation on prisoners as well as the unstimulated surgery and animal slaughter demand your attention. This kind of imagery needs to be well earned, and Viva La Muerte often uses this brutality to great effect. The violence depicted here reflect the themes and inner torture that the youthful main character struggles with. The sincere nature of the director's autobiographical story elevates these hard-to-watch scenes from base shock to more impactful art. The editing here is quite well done, though this is certainly a tough watch.
