Definitely a recommendation from me for anyone who likes space or cold war movies.
Unlike some of its peers, this movie doesn't really focus on a specific aspect of this mission but it showcases each of them: The training, the cosmonauts' motivations, the propaganda machine & government motivations, the eye-candy space sequence (which has some of the most grounded zero-g physics I've seen in a movie), , and . Really interesting to see every aspect get its bit of spotlight, though I could have done without the overdramatization of some scenes.
The structure bothered me as well. Each chapter is disconnected from the next by a slow fade to black & a title card, which gives the movie an almost episodic atmosphere.
The temp music was also very noticable, with the usual crowd favorites being used (The Dark Knight, Inception, Gravity). Give your composers more creative control than this!
But I did enjoy it overall. The acting was solid and the effects were seamless, so there's another movie to add to this decade's "grounded space movie" collection. 3 years ago
